Ready to Respond: Emergency Shelter Exercise
American Red Cross Emergency Shelter Exercise is a training focuses on elevating sheltering skills from basic operations to advanced management, complex problem-solving, and rapid adaptation. Participants will engage in hand-on simulation involving realistic setup, and scenario-driven challenges, emphasizing team collaboration. It would be helpful for participants to have taken the Shelter Fundamental course as a pre-requisite to this course.

Key Simulation Training Objectives:
Hands-On Skills Practice: Practice setting up, registering clients, arranging dormitories, and organizing food distribution.
Teamwork and Communication: Build team collaboration and refine communication strategies within the shelter environment.
Real-World Scenario Readiness: Give volunteers experience with realistic challenges in a low-stress, simulated environment.
Safety and Standards: Ensure participants can maintain a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment (including monitoring food safety and adhering to privacy regulations).
Ready-to-Deploy Skills: Increase confidence, preparedness, and speed in setting up, for example, cots, blankets, and intake procedures.

American Red Cross Shelter Fundamentals is an introductory foundational, training focused on the procedures, checklists, and principles of operating a disaster shelter.

Core Training ObjectivesUpon completion of the training, participants will be able to:
Understand Sheltering Basics: Explain the core principles of Red Cross sheltering and identify the different types of shelters.
Manage the Shelter Lifecycle: Describe the specific tasks, roles, and responsibilities involved in opening, organizing, operating, and closing a shelter.
Follow Shelter Procedures: Recall, locate, and use shelter checklists, forms, and tools for daily operations.
Identify Client Needs: Identify the needs of individuals, including vulnerable populations, and make necessary referrals for assistance.
Establish Key Areas: Set up and maintain a welcoming reception/registration area, functional food distribution, and comfortable, safe dormitory environments.
Ensure Communication: Implement information-sharing strategies, including posting signage and managing data through client sign-in forms

End of the Year Quarterly Meeting
Please join us Tuesday, November 12th from 11:00 to 1:00 for our end-of-the-year NorCal VOAD meeting. This meeting will be held at Cal OES in Sacramento. You will have the chance to meet the Cal OES staff and a few Division Chiefs.
Tours of the Emergency Operation Center will be available right after our meeting.
Cal OES and our VOAD is looking forward to this face-to-face meeting. Cal OES has been an amazing partner through the years, let’s show up and show our appreciation. We will be sending our agenda out the week before.
